Birds Observed This Past Week in the Brainerd Lakes Area
We are now at the end of the spring bird migration now many of the birds are nesting.  The migration was much later due to cool and wet weather but was also longer and more spread out giving more viewing chances.  For some birds the fall migration starts as early as August!
Birds being observed and or reported within the Brainerd lakes area include. Common Loon, Trumpeter Swan, Sandhill Crane, Hooded Merganser, Canada Goose, Mallard, Wood duck, Blue-winged Teal, Ring-billed Gull, Green Heron, Great-blue Heron, Ring-neck Duck, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Black and White Warbler, Ovenbird, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Baltimore Oriole, Gray Catbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Purple Martin, Tree Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Killdeer, Whip-poor-will, Common Nighthawk, Eastern Towhee, Clay-colored Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, Song Sparrow, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Least Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Great-crested Flycatcher, Osprey, Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle, American kestrel, Morning Dove, Wild Turkey, Peregrine Falcon, Belted Kingfisher and Indigo Bunting.  Happy Birding!
A great time to think about birdscaping your yard to help attract more colorful birds!  Ask for native fruiting trees and shrubs to plant around the house or cabin to bring in more birds naturally!
Please also remember many of our Common Loons are nesting, so be careful and cautious when boating around nesting loons.
